In Loving Memory of Elizabeth Young
On Tuesday, September 1st, ISPNE lost one of its early, and certainly most active, members, Professor Elizabeth Young. Elizabeth was an exemplary scientist and colleague, a mentor to young researchers, and a dear friend to many of us. Elizabeth was elected Secretary General of ISPNE in 2008, assuming office after the Dresden meeting in July.
Only a few weeks after beginning an eagerly awaited research sabbatical in London that September, she was diagnosed with acute leukemia that required her to return to Ann Arbor for medical treatment. Perhaps there is no better indication of her dedication to the ISPNE and her scientific spirit than her efforts to conduct the business of ISPNE and to help coordinate this year's San Francisco meeting from home, and even from hospital rooms via conference calls, and Skyping from her laptop. Only the unnecessary risk of infection prevented Elizabeth from attending the San Francisco meeting for which she had registered following what appeared to have been a completely successful bone marrow transplant. Sadly, the leukemia recurred and has taken its toll. Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Peter Hinman, a retired professor of mathematics, easily recognized as that faithful and cheerful companion of hers at ISPNE meetings. To him, our deepest condolences. Elizabeth Young will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
A gathering will be held in Elizabeth's memory on Saturday, October 10th in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
